China made its debut at theGreat Exhibition, thefirstWorldExpoheldin London in 1851 and won the prize with exhibitsinaprivatecapacity. In 1873, the Qing government authorized China Customs to be responsible for attending the Expo. In that year, Bowra, the deputy commissioner of Guangzhou Customs,was sentas China’s representative to the Expo Vienna in Austria. That’s to say, it was aBritish who was on behalf ofChina to attend the Expo.However,with the participation of the Chinese Li Gui, a clerk of Zhejiang Customs,in the Expo, the1876 Philadelphia World Expowas regarded as the first Expo attended by China with its own representatives.
