China wins bid for 2010 World Expo

China has determined to formally bid for the 2010 World Expo under the approval of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China. The bid was made by the Chinese government and Shanghai is served as the host city. In March, 2000, the Chinese government set up the Expo 2010 Shanghai Bidding Committee. Chaired by State Councilor Wu Yi, there are 14 members of the Committee, including Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, Shanghai Municipal People’s Government, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China, the State Development Planning Commission, the State Economic and Trade Commission, the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Finance of the People’s Republic of China, the Ministry of Construction, the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation, the Civil Aviation Administration of China, the General Administration of Sports of China, the former China National Tourism Administration, the State Council Information Office, and the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade.

Among the countries bidding for the 2010 World Expo, China was the first to formally submit an application letter(May 2, 2001) and the“Candidature File” (Jan. 30, 2002) to the Bureau of International Exhibitions (BIE), and was the first to be inspected by the BIE (March 10-17, 2002). Furthermore, presentations were made at the 129th general assembly of the BIE on June 6, 2001, the 130th general assembly on Nov. 30, 2001, the 131st general assembly on July 2, 2002 and the 132nd general assembly from Dec. 2 to 3, 2002.

China won the bid for the 2010 World Expo with 54 votes cast against 34 votes for the runner-up South Korea at the 132nd general assembly of the BIE on Dec. 3, 2002, after four rounds of voting. Shanghai has become the city to host the 2010 World Expo.
