China’s bidding for the World Expo

In October 1992, the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT), the Ministry of Finance and the Beijing Municipal People’s Government jointly submitted to the State Council a proposal to host the World Expo in Beijing at the end of 20th century. It was approved by the State Council in February 1993, and then relevant government departments launched the feasibility study and began to make preparations for the bid for the World Expo.
In September 1993, the State Council approved to set up the Preparatory Committee for the Beijing World Expo which was comprised of eight ministries and commissions of the central government as well as some relevant departments of Beijing municipal government. Moreover, the Preparatory Committee Office was set up at the CCPIT to be responsible for the preparatory work of the World Expo.
China was unanimously approved as the host of the 1999 International Horticultural Expos at the BIE executive committee meeting on November 3, 1994. (A1 category).
The State Council officially approved Yunnan Province as the host of the 1999 International Horticultural Expo on December 12, 1995. Kunming was unanimously approved to be the host city of the 1999 International Horticultural Expo at the 117th General Assembly of the BIE in early December 1995.
